Buckcherry emerged in 1995 as a counter-cultural force against the dominant grunge and nu-metal movements, intentionally channeling the 'sleaze rock' aesthetic of 1980s Sunset Strip bands like Guns N' Roses and Mötley Crüe. Formed by Josh Todd and Keith Nelson, the band's sound is defined by Todd's raspy, high-register vocals and Nelson's classic rock-influenced guitar work.
Their 1999 debut, produced by Terry Date and Steve Jones, was a critical and commercial success, marking DreamWorks' first gold record. After a brief dissolution in 2002, the band reformed in 2005, achieving massive crossover success with the album '15,' which featured the multi-platinum single 'Crazy Bitch.' This era solidified their position as leaders of the hard rock revival. Critically, they are often viewed as the torchbearers for traditional rock and roll values: loud guitars, flamboyant frontmen, and lyrics centered on rebellion, sex, and substance use. Their influence is seen in the 'active rock' radio format, bridging the gap between classic 70s rock and modern alternative metal.
