Bush Tetras

Bush Tetras are a foundational pillar of the New York No Wave and post-punk scenes, formed in 1979. Their sound identity is defined by the intersection of Pat Place's (formerly of The Contortions) abrasive, slide-heavy guitar work and Cynthia Sley's rhythmic, half-spoken vocals.

Unlike many of their No Wave contemporaries who favored pure noise, the Tetras integrated a deep, syncopated funk influence that made their music uniquely danceable despite its dissonance. Their 1980 anthem 'Too Many Creeps' remains a definitive document of urban alienation and the 'downtown' aesthetic. Though they never achieved mainstream commercial success, their influence is immense, directly impacting the 2000s post-punk revival (bands like ESG, LCD Soundsystem, and Liars). Critically, they are lauded for their ability to maintain a tense, minimalist structure while delivering high-impact sonic textures. Their career has been marked by long hiatuses, but their recent output, including 2023's 'They Live in My Head', shows a remarkable preservation of their signature jagged energy and social bite.
