C.W. Stoneking

Dusty, anachronistic blues that sounds like a 1930s radio broadcast found in a time capsule. Vaudeville storytelling meets primitive rock and roll stomp.

Intro

C.W. Stoneking sounds like a ghost who wandered out of a 1920s medicine show and found an electric guitar. His music is a rich, sepia-toned blend of pre-war blues, New Orleans jazz, and Caribbean calypso, all delivered with a distinctive, gravelly drawl that feels entirely out of time. It is music that prioritizes character and atmosphere, often sounding as though it was recorded through a single vintage microphone in a wooden room.

What makes him truly distinctive is his commitment to the 'Hokum' tradition, blending technical fingerpicking and complex horn arrangements with a surreal, storytelling wit. He doesn't just play the blues; he inhabits a specific, mythic world of jungle shipwrecks, voodoo charms, and tall tales. His later work, particularly on 'Gon' Boogaloo,' pushes this into a primitive, high-energy rock and roll space while maintaining that signature dusty, analog warmth.

Start with 'Jungle Blues' to experience his masterful world-building and brass-heavy arrangements. If you prefer something more raw and rhythmic, 'Gon' Boogaloo' offers a stripped-back, electric take on his anachronistic vision. It is the perfect soundtrack for late nights, long drives through rural landscapes, or any moment where you want to disappear into a different century.
