Cancer Bats

High-octane hardcore punk injected with the thick, swampy grooves of southern metal. Gritty, relentless, and built for the front row of a basement show.

Intro

This is the sound of a Toronto basement being shaken to its foundations. It is fast, loud, and unapologetically heavy, but it possesses a rhythmic swing that most hardcore bands lack. The music feels like a collision between the raw speed of Black Flag and the massive, down-tuned riffs of the southern metal scene. It is music that demands physical movement, whether that is a full-speed mosh or a rhythmic headbang.

What sets them apart is the vocal delivery of Liam Cormier, which carries a distinctive raspy grit that feels human and desperate rather than just aggressive. The guitar work often veers into sludge and stoner territory, utilizing thick, fuzzy tones that provide a warm, analog weight to the otherwise sharp punk structures. It is a rare balance of technical metal proficiency and the 'three chords and the truth' ethos of punk rock.

Start with 'Hail Destroyer' to experience their peak intensity. It is the definitive document of their ability to blend massive hooks with punishing speed, serving as the perfect gateway for anyone who loves the energy of The Bronx but wants the heavy low-end of Black Sabbath.
