Intro

Carleen Anderson possesses a voice that feels like it was forged in a Texas church and refined in a London jazz club. It is a soaring, agile soprano that carries the weight of gospel tradition but moves with the sleekness of modern R&B. Her music often sits in that perfect pocket between a deep, funky groove and a spiritual awakening, offering something that is both physically moving and intellectually stimulating.

What truly sets her apart is the lineage of soul royalty she carries, being the daughter of Vicki Anderson and goddaughter of James Brown. Yet, she never leans on nostalgia. Her work with the Young Disciples and her solo catalog defined the Acid Jazz era by injecting it with genuine vocal virtuosity and a sense of 'futuristic' composition that many of her contemporaries lacked. It is sophisticated, warm, and deeply human.

Start with the Young Disciples' 'Road to Freedom' for the definitive 90s soul-jazz experience, then move into her solo debut 'True Spirit' to hear her voice take center stage. For something more experimental and personal, her later work like 'Cage Street Memorial' showcases her evolution into a master storyteller and avant-garde composer.

Carleen Cassandra Anderson (born May 10, 1957 in Houston, Texas, USA) is a UK resident musician where she has lived since 1990. She was the vocalist, composer, and musician for the Young Disciples and is known for her numerous, varied collaborations. Her solo career began in 1992. She is credited with composing and writing futuristic operas. By the time Anderson was three years old, she was singing solos in front of the congregation. At age seven, she was composing songs, playing piano by ear and directing the choir where her Paternal Grandfather, Reverend David Anderson, was the Pastor at Anderson Memorial Church of God in Christ. Anderson’s vocal skills were influenced by her paternal aunt, Betty Faye Anderson, a Juilliard scholar, a Gospel singer and a soprano soloist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
