Intro

Carrie Rodriguez crafts a sound that feels like a warm breeze through an open window in Austin. It is fundamentally rooted in the soil of Texas Americana, but it carries a sophisticated, melodic edge that prevents it from ever feeling like a museum piece. Her music is defined by the interplay between her classically trained yet emotionally raw fiddle playing and a vocal style that sits somewhere between a confidential whisper and a confident belt.

What truly sets her apart is her ability to bridge cultural and musical divides. Whether she is exploring her Chicano heritage through bilingual rancheras or delivering a gritty alt-country anthem, there is a consistent thread of intimacy. Her use of unusual instruments like the electric mandobird adds a subtle, modern texture to the traditional acoustic foundations of her band, creating a sound that is both timeless and fresh.

Start with the album 'Lola' to hear her most ambitious blending of Mexican-American roots and contemporary folk. If you prefer a more straightforward introduction to her songwriting and collaborative spirit, 'Seven Angels on a Bicycle' offers a perfect window into the early sound that established her as a pillar of the modern Americana scene.

Carrie Luz Rodriguez (born July 31, 1978) is an American singer-songwriter and the daughter of Texan singer-songwriter David Rodriguez and Texas painter Katy Nail, and is the granddaughter of prolific Texas essayist Frances Nail. She sings and plays the fiddle, mandobird and tenor guitar. Her touring band members include Luke Jacobs (acoustic and electric guitar, vocals, lap steel guitar, pedal steel), Hans Holzen (acoustic and electric guitar, vocal, lap steel guitar, mandolin), Erik Deutsch (keyboards), Kyle Kegerreis (acoustic and electric bass), and Don Heffington (drums, percussion).
