Catharsis

Catharsis (the US entity) stands as a pillar of the late 90s anarchist hardcore scene, primarily associated with the CrimethInc. collective.

Formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, they redefined the expectations of metalcore by injecting it with the sprawling structures of post-rock and the ideological fervor of crust punk. Their sound identity is defined by Brian D's visceral vocal delivery and a compositional style that favors lengthy, multi-part tracks with complex time signatures and thematic depth. They were heavily influenced by the dark hardcore of Integrity and the atmospheric sludge of Neurosis, yet they carved out a unique space by incorporating disparate elements like Diamanda Galas-style theatricality and Peter Tosh-inspired rhythms. Their career arc saw them become a cult phenomenon before disbanding in 2002, only to return for significant reunions and new material in the 2010s and 2020s. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the visceral 'holy terror' hardcore sound and the more experimental, atmospheric metal that would follow in the 2000s.
