Cayucas, led by brothers Zach and Ben Yudin, emerged from Santa Monica in the early 2010s as a vital part of the California indie-pop revival. Originally a solo project titled Oregon Bike Trails, the project evolved into Cayucas upon signing with Secretly Canadian.
Their sound is a meticulous blend of 1960s surf rock, Brill Building pop sensibilities, and modern indie aesthetics. Their debut, Bigfoot, was produced by the late Richard Swift, whose signature analog warmth and eccentric production choices helped define the band's sonic identity. Throughout their career, they have maintained a consistent focus on themes of nostalgia, coastal life, and youthful memory. Critically, they are often grouped with contemporaries like Generationals and Real Estate for their ability to balance catchy hooks with atmospheric, guitar-driven textures. While their sound has polished over time, particularly on albums like Dancing at the Blue Lagoon, they have never lost the 'sun-faded' quality that makes their music a staple of summer-themed curation and coastal road trip soundtracks.
