Cenotaph

Cenotaph is the foundational pillar of the Turkish brutal death metal scene, formed in Ankara in 1994 by vocalist Batu Cetin. As the only constant member through decades of lineup shifts, Cetin has steered the band from its early goregrind-influenced demos like 'Life Immortal' (1995) into a highly technical, world-class death metal entity.

Their sound identity is characterized by 'pig-squeal' and guttural vocal techniques, extremely high-tempo percussion, and complex, chromatic guitar work. Culturally, they put Turkey on the map for extreme metal, securing international distribution through specialized labels like Sevared and Coyote Records. Critically, they are respected for maintaining a consistent level of brutality while evolving their musicianship, avoiding the 'over-produced' pitfalls of many 21st-century peers. They occupy a specific niche alongside acts like Disgorge and Deeds of Flesh, prioritizing visceral impact and rhythmic density over melodic accessibility.
