Elegant Lebanese oud mastery meets the fluid improvisation of contemporary jazz. Intricate, soulful, and deeply rooted in Mediterranean tradition.
Charbel Rouhana creates a sound that feels like a bridge between ancient stone architecture and modern glass skylines. At the center is the oud, played with a precision that highlights its woody, resonant body, but the arrangements often drift into the sophisticated territory of European chamber jazz. It is music that demands a certain level of stillness to fully appreciate the microtonal nuances and the delicate interplay between the strings and the percussion.
What makes Rouhana truly distinctive is his 'Oud Jazz' philosophy. He doesn't just play jazz on an Arabic instrument; he translates the emotional vocabulary of the Maqam system into a modern improvisational context. The result is music that feels intellectually rigorous yet emotionally accessible, avoiding the clichés of 'fusion' in favor of a genuine, lived-in dialogue between East and West.
Start with the album 'Dangerous' for a perfect introduction to his rhythmic complexity and melodic grace. It showcases how he can take a traditional foundation and make it feel urgent and contemporary without losing its soul. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments of deep focus or quiet reflection.
