Intimate, experimental jazz that finds the hidden melodies in human speech. A quiet, curious exploration of the music hidden in everyday life.
Charles Spearin is a pivotal figure in the Canadian independent music scene, best known as a co-founder of the influential post-rock collective Do Make Say Think and the indie-rock supergroup Broken Social Scene. His solo work, however, represents a distinct departure into experimental jazz and conceptual sound art.
His primary contribution to the genre is the 'speech-to-melody' technique showcased on his Juno-winning 2009 album, The Happiness Project. This work was born from a combination of his Buddhist practice and his experience growing up with a blind father, which heightened his sensitivity to the musicality of environmental and vocal sounds. Spearin's career arc demonstrates a restless curiosity, moving from the dense, cinematic crescendos of post-rock to the minimalist, improvisational world of modern classical and avant-garde jazz. He is highly regarded by critics for his ability to find profound emotional resonance in the mundane, often collaborating with other members of the Toronto Arts & Crafts scene to create works that are both technically complex and deeply humanistic.
