Charlie Peacock (born Charles William Ashworth) is a pivotal figure in the evolution of Contemporary Christian Music (CCM), though his influence extends far into mainstream pop and jazz. Emerging from the Northern California jazz scene in the 1970s, he initially gained traction as a jazz pianist before pivoting to a sophisticated brand of art-pop in the 1980s.
His early work on Exit Records, particularly 'Lie Down in the Grass,' showcased a new wave sensibility informed by high-level musicianship. As a producer, he became a kingmaker in the Nashville scene, most notably producing the Civil Wars and Switchfoot, while maintaining a solo career that grew increasingly experimental. His later work has come full circle, returning to his jazz roots with collaborations involving Ravi Coltrane and other luminaries. Critically, he is viewed as a 'musician's musician,' respected for his refusal to simplify his arrangements for the CCM market.
