Intro

Charlotte Wessels crafts a sound that feels like a secret whispered in a cathedral. While her roots are firmly planted in the grandiosity of symphonic metal, her solo work leans into a more intimate, experimental space. It is music that balances the weight of heavy guitars with the delicate precision of chamber pop and electronic textures, creating a sonic world that is both vast and deeply personal.

What sets her apart is the 'Six Feet Under' aesthetic, a result of her transition from stadium stages to a home studio. This shift introduced a unique 'bedroom metal' quality, where operatic vocal flourishes meet lo-fi synth experiments and raw, confessional lyricism. Her voice remains the centerpiece, capable of soaring over orchestral swells or dropping to a vulnerable, breathy murmur that feels like she is standing right next to you.

Start with 'The Obsession' to hear her most realized vision of this hybrid sound. It captures the tension between her metal heritage and her restless curiosity as a songwriter. It is the perfect entry point for those who love the drama of Nightwish but crave the idiosyncratic, poetic depth of artists like Kate Bush or Björk.

Johanna Charlotte Wessels (born 13 May 1987) is a Dutch singer and songwriter, best known as the former lead vocalist for the symphonic metal band Delain. Wessels met Martijn Westerholt in 2004, and was invited to restart Delain in 2005 when it originally was a studio project, becoming the lead vocalist of the band until her departure from the band in 2021. Shortly after she left Delain, she started her solo career that same year with the release of her debut solo album, Tales from Six Feet Under, which was released in September. The following year, she released Tales from Six Feet Under, Vol. II, a follow-up to her debut in October. In 2024, Wessels released her third solo album, The Obsession, in September.
