Charly Bliss

High-octane power pop that pairs sugary, fuzzed-out hooks with hyper-expressive vocals. It is the sound of a nervous breakdown at a neon-lit birthday party.

Intro

Charly Bliss sounds like a sugar rush that never quite crashes. Their music is a vibrant collision of nineties guitar fuzz and eighties synth-pop sheen, all anchored by Eva Hendricks' unmistakable, elastic vocal delivery. It is bright, loud, and unapologetically hooky, capturing the specific feeling of being young, overwhelmed, and intensely alive.

What sets them apart is the 'bubblegrunge' tension: the music is often ebullient and danceable, but the lyrics dive deep into the messy realities of self-doubt, trauma, and complex relationships. They manage to make the most embarrassing or painful parts of the human experience feel like a stadium-sized anthem. It is precision-engineered pop played with the reckless heart of a garage band.

Start with their debut album, Guppy, for a masterclass in guitar-driven power pop. If you prefer a more polished, synth-heavy sound that explores broader emotional territory, move straight to Young Enough. Both records showcase a band that knows exactly how to turn a panic attack into a singalong.

Charly Bliss is an American power pop band from Brooklyn, New York, who formed in 2011. The band's line-up is composed of siblings Eva (lead vocals, guitar) and Sam (drums) Hendricks, lead guitarist Spencer Fox, and bassist Dan Shure. To date, the band have released three studio albums, Guppy (2017), Young Enough (2019), and Forever (2024). The music of Charly Bliss has been described as "bubblegrunge", a portmanteau of bubblegum pop and grunge music. Of Guppy, Pitchfork wrote that the band "hone in on [sic] an era from about 20 years ago, when seemingly every other band came blissed out, drenched in sun, and outfitted for a spot on the 10 Things I Hate About You or Jawbreaker soundtrack next to Veruca Salt."
