Angular, interlocking guitar riffs that feel like a precision-engineered machine. Brainy post-hardcore with unexpected pop hooks and a tightly coiled urban energy.
Chavez occupies a unique position in the 1990s American underground, bridging the gap between the intellectual rigor of math rock and the anthemic power of classic arena rock. Formed in NYC in 1993, the band was a supergroup of sorts, featuring Matt Sweeney (Skunk), James Lo (Wider), and Clay Tarver (Bullet Lavolta).
Their sound is defined by 'interlocking' guitar work, where Sweeney and Tarver play complementary, often dissonant parts that resolve into massive, satisfying riffs. Unlike many math rock contemporaries who prioritized complexity over songcraft, Chavez maintained a verse-chorus sensibility influenced by bands like Blue Öyster Cult and Cheap Trick. Their two main albums, 'Gone Glimmering' and 'Ride the Fader', were released on Matador Records and became cult classics. Sweeney’s later career as a high-profile collaborator (Zwan, Superwolf) has kept the band's legacy alive, leading to a successful 2006 reunion and the 2017 'Cockfighters' EP. They are widely cited as a primary influence on the precision-based indie rock of the 2000s.
