Jittery, dry-witted indie rock that feels like a caffeinated conversation about the end of the world. Talk-singing for the chronically anxious.
Cheekface sounds like the inside of a very smart, very stressed-out person's brain. The music is built on a foundation of tight, bouncy basslines and sharp, clean guitar riffs that owe as much to the minimalist funk of the B-52's as they do to the art-punk of Wire. There is a deliberate lack of atmosphere; the band famously requests no reverb or delay, resulting in a sound that is startlingly intimate and immediate, like they are playing right in your ear.
What truly sets them apart is the lyrical delivery of Greg Katz. His talk-singing style transforms every song into a barrage of witty one-liners, absurd observations, and hyper-specific cultural references. It is music that captures the specific frequency of modern millennial anxiety, where every existential crisis is met with a dry joke and a catchy hook. The interplay between the upbeat, danceable rhythms and the themes of sociopolitical dread creates a unique tension that is both cathartic and hilarious.
Start with the album Emphatically No. to get the full experience of their signature sound. It is an essential document of 21st-century unease, featuring tracks that are short, punchy, and packed with enough lyrical depth to keep you coming back for the jokes you missed the first time around.
