Childhood emerged from the fertile UK indie scene of the early 2010s, specifically the Nottingham-to-London pipeline. Founded by Ben Romans-Hopcraft and Leo Dobsen, the band initially aligned with the 'B-Town' and jangle-pop movements, sharing a sonic kinship with artists like Swim Deep and Real Estate.
Their debut album, 'Lacuna' (2014), produced by Dan Carey, was a masterclass in modern dream pop, characterized by its 'scarily melodic' hooks and expansive, reverb-soaked arrangements. However, their second effort, 'Universal High' (2017), marked a significant stylistic pivot. Recorded in Atlanta with Ben H. Allen III, the record leaned heavily into 1970s soul, funk, and sophisticated pop, moving away from the guitar-driven haze of their debut toward a more rhythmic, vocal-centric identity. This evolution showcased Romans-Hopcraft's versatility as a frontman and a producer. Despite critical acclaim for their ability to blend indie sensibilities with high-fidelity soul, the group disbanded in 2018. Their legacy remains as a bridge between the lo-fi indie aesthetics of the early 2010s and the more polished, genre-fluid pop that would come to define the decade's end.
