CHOPS

Hand-played grooves and crisp, non-sampled percussion that redefined the Philly underground. Sophisticated boom-bap for the deep-crate listener.

Intro

CHOPS delivers a sound that feels both classic and curiously distinct from the sample-heavy traditions of his peers. While most 2000s underground producers were digging for obscure vinyl loops, CHOPS was often playing the instruments himself, resulting in a warm, organic texture that retains the grit of the street but possesses the clarity of a live session. It is music that respects the boom-bap architecture while introducing a musician's precision to the rhythm section.

What makes his work truly stand out is the marriage of technical proficiency and raw hip-hop instinct. His beats don't just loop; they breathe. There is a specific weight to his drum programming that feels more like a physical performance than a digital sequence. This 'live-not-sampled' approach gives his catalog a timeless quality, avoiding the sonic fatigue that can come from over-recycled breaks.

Start with 'Virtuosity' to hear him command a roster of legends like Raekwon and Kanye West, or dive into his instrumental work to appreciate the intricate layers of his compositions. It is the perfect soundtrack for moments that require both focus and a steady, undeniable pulse.

CHOPS is the stage name of Scott Robert Jung, also known as Scott Chops Jung, an American hip hop producer, rapper and former member of the Asian American Hip-Hop group, the Mountain Brothers. Jung grew up in Philadelphia and has Chinese ancestry. While with Mountain Brothers, he became known for using a combination of programmed and live instruments in his work, as opposed to sampling the work of others. Since the disbanding of the Mountain Brothers, CHOPS has worked primarily as a producer, with his most high-profile piece being the critically acclaimed 2011 video for Lonely Island entitled "The Creep."
