Intro

Chris Farlowe possesses one of the most formidable voices in British music history, a booming, operatic baritone that bridges the gap between sophisticated 60s pop and raw, gut-bucket blues. His sound is defined by a theatrical intensity, where every note feels like it is being pushed to its emotional limit. Whether backed by the lush, Andrew Loog Oldham-produced arrangements of the Immediate era or the heavy, Hammond-drenched grooves of his later rock work, his voice remains the undeniable center of gravity.

What truly distinguishes Farlowe is his versatility and the sheer physical power of his delivery. He is a 'singer's singer,' capable of navigating the intricate melodies of a Jagger-Richards composition just as easily as he handles the complex, jazz-inflected time signatures of progressive rock. There is a specific London grit to his work, a sense of the 1960s mod scene evolving into something heavier and more musically ambitious as the decade turned.

To understand the hype, start with his definitive version of 'Out of Time,' which showcases his ability to turn a pop song into a soulful anthem. From there, move to the original 'Handbags and Gladrags' to hear his more sensitive, storytelling side, before diving into his work with Colosseum to witness his voice battling against high-octane jazz-rock instrumentation.

Chris Farlowe (born John Henry Deighton, 13 October 1940) is an English rock, blues and blue-eyed soul singer. He is best known for his hit single "Out of Time" written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, which rose to No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in 1966, and his association with bands Atomic Rooster, the Thunderbirds, and Colosseum. Outside his music career, Farlowe collects war memorabilia.
