Driving synth-rock and gothic electronics that defined Italian horror. Tense, rhythmic, and unmistakably cinematic music for late-night intensity.
Claudio Simonetti creates music that feels like a chase sequence through a neon-lit Roman alleyway. It is a high-octane blend of progressive rock complexity and the rhythmic pulse of early electronic dance music. The sound is dominated by thick, analog synthesizer leads and aggressive, funk-influenced basslines that create an immediate sense of forward motion and impending dread. Even at its most melodic, there is an underlying serrated edge that keeps the listener on high alert.
What truly sets Simonetti apart is his ability to marry the sacred with the profane. He frequently utilizes haunting church organs and operatic flourishes, then crashes them directly into driving disco beats or heavy metal guitar riffs. This juxtaposition creates a 'Giallo' aesthetic that is both sophisticated and visceral. His work with Goblin and his solo scores established a blueprint for how synthesizers could evoke terror not just through atmosphere, but through relentless, earworm-inducing hooks.
Start with the 'Demons' soundtrack for a pure hit of 80s synth-metal energy, or dive into 'Profondo Rosso' to hear the foundational progressive rock roots. These albums serve as the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the intersection of cinematic tension and rhythmic drive.
