High-octane British jazz-rock that bridges the gap between heavy blues and complex prog. Explosive drumming meets soulful brass for a gritty, sophisticated sound.
Colosseum stands as a foundational pillar of the British jazz-rock movement, formed in 1968 by alumni of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Led by drummer Jon Hiseman and saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith, the group was instrumental in moving the UK blues scene toward a more complex, improvisational, and 'progressive' territory.
Their 1969 debut, 'Those Who Are About to Die Salute You', and the follow-up 'Valentyne Suite' (the first release on the iconic Vertigo label) established a sound characterized by technical virtuosity, brass-heavy arrangements, and extended suite structures. The addition of vocalist Chris Farlowe in 1970 brought a blue-eyed soul dimension that distinguished them from the more whimsical Canterbury scene or the colder experimentalism of Soft Machine. Despite a breakup in 1971, their influence persisted through Hiseman's later project Colosseum II and various reunions. Critical consensus views them as the bridge between the 1960s blues explosion and the 1970s progressive era, noted specifically for Hiseman's pioneering use of double-bass drumming in a non-metal context.
