Couch

Couch was a pivotal instrumental group in the Munich-based indie scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Emerging from the same creative fertile ground as acts like Lali Puna and The Notwist, Couch distinguished themselves by stripping away vocals entirely to focus on the interplay of rhythm and melody.

Their sound is deeply indebted to the 1970s Krautrock tradition, specifically the rhythmic persistence of Neu! and the melodic minimalism of Kraftwerk, but updated with the production sensibilities of the Morr Music and Kitty-Yo labels. Throughout their career, they evolved from a raw, guitar-centric approach on 'Etwas benutzen' to a more sophisticated, synth-integrated aesthetic on their final album, 'Figur 5'. Critically, they were praised for their 'mathematical' precision and their ability to make instrumental rock feel accessible and pop-oriented without relying on traditional song structures. They remain a cult favorite among post-rock and IDM enthusiasts for their unique ability to bridge the gap between live band energy and electronic stillness.
