Intro

Crash Course in Science (CCIS) is a seminal Philadelphia-based trio that emerged in 1979, occupying a unique intersection of post-punk, industrial, and minimal electronic music. Comprised of Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny, the group rejected conventional rock instrumentation, opting instead for toy instruments, kitchen appliances, and custom-built analog devices.

This 'junk-shop' approach to electronics resulted in a raw, percussive sound characterized by jittery sequencers and deadpan vocal delivery. Their 1981 EP, 'Signals from Pier Thirteen,' is widely cited as a foundational text for the electro and techno-industrial movements, influencing artists from the Detroit techno scene to modern darkwave. Despite a long hiatus, their reputation grew among crate-diggers and collectors, leading to a successful reformation in 2009. Critical consensus views CCIS as pioneers of 'primitive' electronics, praised for their ability to extract sophisticated, danceable rhythms from crude, non-musical objects. Their influence is felt most strongly in the 'minimal synth' and 'EBM' revivalist movements of the 21st century.
