Curved Air emerged from the 1970 London underground as one of the most musically diverse groups of the progressive rock era. Formed by members with backgrounds in the Royal College of Music and the musical 'Hair,' the band's identity was built on the intersection of Sonja Kristina's theatrical folk-pop vocals and Darryl Way's conservatory-trained violin.
Their debut, 'Air Conditioning,' was notable not just for its music but for being the first-ever commercially released picture disc. Throughout the early 70s, they navigated the 'Big Three' era of their discography with Francis Monkman providing pioneering synthesizer work on the VCS3. The band served as a crucial bridge between the pastoral folk-rock of the late 60s and the high-concept art rock of the mid-70s. Their influence is notable for introducing a feminine, theatrical perspective to a largely male-dominated genre and for their early adoption of electronic processing on acoustic instruments. The band's legacy also includes being a launching pad for Stewart Copeland, whose high-energy drumming in the later lineup hinted at the rhythmic innovations he would bring to The Police.
