Dargaard

Dargaard is an Austrian neoclassical darkwave project formed in 1997 by Tharen, a prominent figure in the black metal scene (Abigor, Amestigon). Seeking an outlet for more atmospheric and somber expressions, Tharen moved away from the aggression of metal toward a sound built entirely on synthesizers and keyboards, mimicking medieval and orchestral instrumentation.

The addition of vocalist Elisabeth Toriser in 1998 finalized the band's identity, blending her ethereal, operatic delivery with Tharen's dark, ritualistic compositions. Their debut, 'Eternity Rites', established a 'fairytale' aesthetic that resonated with both the gothic and metal subcultures. Over four albums released via Napalm Records, the duo refined a sound characterized by synthetic strings, choral patches, and a pervasive sense of isolation. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the dark ambient and neoclassical genres, often compared to label-mates Die Verbannten Kinder Evas. Their work is a cornerstone of the late-90s European darkwave movement, maintaining a cult following for its ability to evoke cinematic, medieval imagery through purely electronic means.
