Dark Age

Dark Age is a seminal fixture of the German melodic death metal scene, formed in Hamburg in 1994. Originally starting under the name Dyer's Eve, the band quickly evolved from their early death-thrash roots into a more nuanced, 'Dark Metal' sound that incorporated elements of gothic rock and industrial electronics.

Led by Eike Freese, who has also gained significant renown as a producer at Chameleon Studios, the band's output is characterized by exceptionally high production values and a meticulous approach to songcraft. Their career arc saw a steady progression from the raw aggression of 'Insurrection' to the highly melodic and structurally complex 'Acedia' and 'A Matter of Trust'. Critically, they are often grouped with the second wave of melodic death metal, noted for being less folk-influenced than their Finnish peers and more focused on urban, modern atmospheres. Their influence is felt primarily in the Central European metal scene, where they bridged the gap between traditional extreme metal and the more accessible alternative metal sounds of the 2010s.
