Cold, primitive, and uncompromising. This is the definitive sound of Norwegian black metal, evolving from frozen necro-aesthetics into a gritty, punk-fueled metal hybrid.
Darkthrone is a foundational pillar of the Norwegian black metal scene, though their career is marked by a refusal to be pinned down by genre dogmas. Formed in 1986 as Black Death, they initially mastered technical death metal on their debut 'Soulside Journey' before a radical shift toward a primitive, lo-fi black metal aesthetic.
This transition, influenced heavily by Bathory and Celtic Frost, resulted in the 'Unholy Trinity' of albums which defined the 'necro' sound: thin production, tremolo picking, and a focus on cold, atmospheric dread. Since 1993, the band has operated as a duo consisting of Fenriz (the scene's unofficial historian and drummer) and Nocturno Culto. Their middle and late periods saw a departure from pure black metal toward a 'blackened crust' and traditional heavy metal sound, incorporating d-beat rhythms and doom elements. They are notable for their total rejection of live performance and mainstream industry standards, maintaining a cult status that is respected across the metal spectrum for its authenticity and encyclopedic knowledge of metal's underground roots.
