Das Kabinette

Das Kabinette is a seminal British minimal synth group formed in 1981 by Blackpool Art College students Dave, Craig, and Mick. Their sound identity is defined by a stark, DIY approach to electronic music, utilizing early synthesizers and drum machines to create atmospheric, often eerie soundscapes.

They are most famous for their 1983 single 'The Cabinet,' which was directly inspired by the German Expressionist film 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.' This cinematic influence set them apart from the more commercially-minded synth-pop acts of the era, aligning them instead with the darker, more experimental 'minimal wave' scene. Despite early support from BBC Radio 1's Janice Long and a brief association with Gary Numan's Numa label, the band remained largely underground during their active years. Their work gained significant critical reappraisal in the 2000s when the Minimal Wave label released 'Spy Thriller,' a compilation that finally brought their 1980s recordings to a wider audience. They are now considered essential figures in the history of independent electronic music, bridging the gap between post-punk experimentation and the birth of modern darkwave.
