Das Niveau

Das Niveau is a German 'Spielleute' (minstrel) duo consisting of Martin 'Sören' Vogelsang and Michael 'Sören' Pauw, formed in 2010. They occupy a unique niche within the German medieval and folk scene, often referred to as 'Comedy-Folk.'

Unlike their contemporaries who might focus on historical accuracy or dark fantasy themes, Das Niveau utilizes the medieval market circuit as a backdrop for contemporary satire and ribald humor. Their sound identity is characterized by dual acoustic guitars, vocal harmonies, and a heavy reliance on the 'Sören' stage personas. Their career arc saw them rise quickly within the 'Mittelalterszene' (medieval scene), becoming staples at major festivals like Wacken Open Air and various MPS (Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectaculum) events. Critically, they are praised for their lyrical dexterity and ability to bridge the gap between traditional folk and modern cabaret. They are deeply connected to the 'Liedermacher' tradition but infused with a post-modern, self-aware irony that appeals to a younger, festival-going demographic.
