Born in Johannesburg in 1967, David John Matthews is an American rock musician best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter for the Dave Matthews Band. After beginning his guitar studies at age nine, he founded the group in Charlottesville in 1991. The band evolved from local college performances into a massive commercial success, earning the highest North American tour revenue between 2000 and 2009 while recording under the Sony Music label.
