Shimmering, sun-drenched guitar lines and breathy vocals that capture the hazy spirit of the New Zealand coast. Perfect for slow afternoons and long coastal drives.
David Kilgour makes music that feels like a polaroid left in the sun. It is defined by a specific kind of 'jangle' that is less about 60s pop perfection and more about a loose, organic, and slightly psychedelic wandering. His guitar work is unmistakable, characterized by shimmering arpeggios and melodic leads that seem to float just above the rhythm section like sea mist.
What sets him apart is the effortless cool of his delivery. There is no straining for effect here; the vocals are often a gentle, melodic mumble that blends into the instrumental texture rather than sitting on top of it. It is music that feels deeply rooted in the landscape of New Zealand, carrying a sense of isolation, space, and quiet beauty that is both melancholic and deeply comforting.
Start with 'A Feather in the Engine' to hear his atmospheric songwriting at its peak, or 'Here Come the Cars' for a more direct introduction to his signature guitar style. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments when you want to feel the world slow down just a little bit.
