David Rees

Abrasive noise meets absurdist humor. From glitchy pop mashups to political sound collages, this is music for the irony-poisoned and the endlessly curious.

Intro

David Rees creates music that feels like a chaotic browser with forty tabs open, all of them fighting for your attention. It is a collision of high-concept humor and genuine sonic aggression. One moment you are hearing the familiar hooks of a pop star mangled by IDM rhythms, and the next you are submerged in a wall of uncompromising noise that feels both intellectual and visceral. It is the sound of a brilliant mind refusing to take the medium seriously while simultaneously mastering its most difficult corners.

What makes Rees distinctive is his background as a humorist and cultural critic. He approaches music as another tool for satire, using the 'Aphex Swift' project to highlight the strange intersections of mainstream and underground culture. His original noise work is equally defiant, eschewing melody for texture and rhythm, often incorporating the same 'trash talk' energy that defined his early cartooning career. It is music that demands you engage with its context as much as its frequency.

Start with 'Aphex Swift' if you want to see how he bridges the gap between the accessible and the avant-garde. It is a fascinating study in contrast that manages to be genuinely catchy despite its bizarre premise. If you find yourself enjoying the more abrasive edges, move on to 'YOU AINT GOIN NOWHERE' to experience his full transition into pure, unadulterated noise music.

David Thomas Rees ( REESS; born June 22, 1972) is a humorist and cultural critic. He first rose to prominence as a cartoonist whose best-known work combined bland clip art with "trash talk". Rees later created an artisanal pencil sharpening service and published a related book on the subject. He co-created and hosted two seasons of the television series Going Deep with David Rees. He is also the co-creator and co-host of the podcast Election Profit Makers.
