Aggressive, overdriven bass and disco-punk drums. It is the sound of a basement riot that you can actually dance to. High-voltage energy for restless nights.
Death From Above 1979 is a seminal Canadian duo consisting of bassist/keyboardist Jesse F. Keeler and drummer/vocalist Sebastien Grainger.
Formed in Toronto in 2001, they became the vanguard of the dance-punk movement by intentionally omitting guitars in favor of a heavily distorted, 'lead' bass sound. Their 2004 debut, 'You're a Woman, I'm a Machine,' achieved gold status in Canada and became a cult classic globally, influencing a wave of noise-rock and indie-dance acts. After a high-profile breakup in 2006, during which Keeler found massive success in the electronic duo MSTRKRFT, the band reunited in 2011. Their second era has seen them refine their production, moving from the lo-fi grit of their early EPs to a more muscular, studio-polished sound on albums like 'The Physical World.' Critically, they are praised for their technical proficiency and the sheer volume they generate as a duo. They occupy a unique cultural space between the DIY punk scene and the electronic club world, bridging the gap between mosh pits and dance floors.
