Deepside

Deepside is a critical early alias for Ludovic Navarre, the producer who would later achieve global fame as St. Germain.

Operating primarily between 1992 and 1994, the Deepside project was central to the identity of the Fnac Music Dance Division and F Communications labels, founded by Eric Morand and Laurent Garnier. This era represents the 'French Touch' in its infancy, characterized by a deep reverence for Detroit techno and Chicago house, but infused with a distinctly European sense of cinematic atmosphere and jazz-inflected harmony. The sound identity is defined by the use of classic hardware like the TR-909 and TB-303, treated with heavy filtering and analog saturation to create a 'dusty' aesthetic. Critically, Deepside is viewed as the bridge between the underground rave scene and the more sophisticated, lounge-adjacent house music that would dominate the late 90s.
