DFRNT is the primary alias of Edinburgh-based producer Alex Cowles, a central figure in the 'atmospheric dubstep' or 'futurestep' movement of the late 2000s and early 2010s. Emerging during the post-dubstep transition, Cowles distanced his sound from the aggressive 'brostep' trend, instead drawing influence from the deep, space-conscious roots of dub and the emotive textures of IDM and trip-hop.

As the founder of the Echodub label, he was instrumental in cultivating a community of producers focused on the more melodic and contemplative side of bass music. His sound identity is defined by a 'submerged' quality, often utilizing heavy low-pass filters, long delay tails, and field recordings to create a sense of place.
