Icy, melodic post-punk from the heart of the 80s Italian underground. Existential lyrics meet flanged guitars for a cold, urban late-night mood.
Diaframma is a cornerstone of the Italian New Wave (Onda Rossa) scene that emerged from Florence in the early 1980s. Formed in 1979, the band was initially led by the creative partnership of guitarist/songwriter Federico Fiumani and vocalist Miro Sassolini, though Fiumani eventually took over vocal duties, becoming the band's permanent figurehead.
Their sound is characterized by a fusion of British post-punk influences (Joy Division, The Cure) with a distinctly Italian literary sensibility. Their debut album, 'Siberia', is widely considered one of the most important Italian rock records of all time, establishing a 'cold' aesthetic that influenced generations of alternative artists. Throughout the 90s and 2000s, Fiumani steered the band through various lineup changes and stylistic shifts toward a more straightforward alternative rock sound, while maintaining a fiercely independent ethos. They are frequently grouped with Litfiba as the architects of the Florence scene, though Diaframma maintained a more cult, underground status due to Fiumani's refusal to compromise with major label demands. Their legacy is defined by their ability to marry aggressive punk-derived energy with sophisticated, melancholic art-rock arrangements.
