Diamond Rings is the solo project of Toronto artist John O'Regan, who emerged from the Ontario indie rock scene (notably the band The D'Urbervilles) to redefine himself as a synth-pop icon. The project began in 2009 with a DIY ethos, characterized by home-recorded singles and highly stylized music videos that blended 80s athleticism with glam aesthetics.
His debut, Special Affections (2010), received significant critical acclaim, including a Pitchfork Best New Music designation, for its ability to marry indie-pop sensibilities with dancefloor-ready production. O'Regan's sound is heavily influenced by the New Romantic movement and early hip-hop production, utilizing Roland-style drum sounds and bright, staccato synth leads. His second album, Free Dimensional (2012), saw a shift toward a more maximalist, high-fidelity sound, working with producer Damian Taylor to achieve a stadium-ready polish. Culturally, Diamond Rings was a key figure in the early 2010s 'indie-sleaze' and synth-revival era, bridging the gap between underground art-rock and mainstream pop aspirations.
