Dinosaur Jr. is a foundational pillar of American alternative rock, bridging the gap between 80s hardcore punk and the 90s grunge explosion.

Formed in 1984 after the dissolution of the hardcore band Deep Wound, the original trio of J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph pioneered a sound that combined the aggressive volume of SST-era punk with the melodic sensibilities of classic rock and the feedback-heavy experimentation of Sonic Youth. Mascis's guitar style, characterized by heavy use of the Big Muff fuzz pedal and intricate, blues-influenced solos, single-handedly reintroduced the 'guitar hero' archetype to the indie underground. Despite a tumultuous history marked by the high-profile firing of Barlow in 1989 and a period where the band functioned as a Mascis solo project, their 2005 reunion is widely considered one of the most successful in rock history.
