Dissonance

Dissonance is a seminal figure in the Slovakian technical death metal scene, emerging in 1993 from the ashes of the thrash outfit Notorica. Their sound identity is defined by a transition from straightforward speed to complex, avant-garde compositions characterized by dissonant intervals and polyrhythmic structures.

Their 1994 debut, 'Look to Forget', remains a high-water mark for Central European metal, blending the ferocity of death metal with progressive sensibilities that were ahead of their time. Despite a period of relative obscurity and lineup changes, the band's influence persisted through tape-trading circles, eventually leading to a resurgence in interest and the release of 'The Intricacies of Nothingness'. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the raw 'old school' death metal sound and the more academic technicality that would follow. They occupy a unique cultural position as pioneers of the 'Slovakian sound', which prioritizes atmosphere and structural complexity over pure speed or commercial polish.
