DJ Food

Dusty, sample-heavy grooves that bridge the gap between jazz club and hip-hop basement. Cinematic downtempo for late-night thinking and deep crate digging.

Intro

DJ Food is a seminal electronic project founded in 1990 by Coldcut (Jonathan More and Matt Black) as a foundational pillar of the Ninja Tune label. Originally conceived as a series of 'food for DJs' - collections of breaks and loops for mixing - the project evolved into a sophisticated artist entity.

The early 'Jazz Brakes' series (Volumes 1-5) was instrumental in defining the UK's trip-hop and downtempo sound, blending jazz sensibilities with hip-hop production techniques. By the mid-90s, with the inclusion of Patrick Carpenter (PC) and later Kevin Foakes (Strictly Kev), the sound shifted toward cinematic, long-form compositions seen in 'A Recipe for Disaster' (1995) and the psychedelic 'Kaleidoscope' (2000). The project is a nexus of the 'Solid Steel' radio aesthetic, emphasizing eclectic selection and technical turntablism. Critically, DJ Food is respected for elevating the sample-based 'breakbeat album' into a respected art form, influencing a generation of producers from The Herbaliser to Bonobo. Today, the moniker is primarily the vehicle for Kevin Foakes, maintaining its legacy through high-concept releases and deep-catalog curation.
