Intro

DJ Trace (Duncan Hutchison) is a pivotal figure in the evolution of drum and bass, specifically credited as a primary architect of the techstep subgenre. Emerging from the early 90s jungle scene, Trace shifted the genre's trajectory toward a darker, more industrial aesthetic through his work with the No U-Turn label and his landmark remix 'Mutant Revisited'.

This track popularized the 'Reece' bassline, a detuned, phased sawtooth sound that became a foundational element of neurofunk and techstep. His career arc moved from early breakbeat hardcore into the clinical, dystopian sounds of the late 90s, eventually leading to the formation of his influential DSCI4 label. Trace is regarded by critics as a 'producer's producer', valued for his technical precision and his role in stripping away the ragga influences of jungle to reveal a cold, machine-led future. His influence persists in modern neurofunk and dark DnB, maintaining a legacy of sonic aggression and atmospheric tension.
