Atmospheric Norwegian black metal that trades raw speed for ancient, forest-dwelling textures. Melodic, ritualistic, and deeply rooted in the cold night.
Djevel represents the 'third wave' of Norwegian black metal, bridging the gap between the raw 1990s foundations and modern atmospheric sensibilities. Founded in 2009 by Trånn Ciekals (formerly of Ljå), the project has served as a supergroup of sorts, featuring members from Kvelertak, Urgehal, and Emperor (Faust).
Despite numerous lineup shifts, Ciekals remained the primary architect of the band's sound until his passing in 2025, ensuring a consistent focus on 'Norsk' identity. Their sound is characterized by a rejection of modern, sterile production in favor of an aesthetic that mirrors the early 90s but with significantly higher melodic sophistication. Critically, they are lauded for their ability to maintain the genre's inherent darkness while incorporating folk-inflected acoustic interludes and concept-driven trilogies. Their cultural position is one of traditionalist innovators, winning the Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy) and cementing their status as leaders of the contemporary Oslo black metal scene alongside peers like Mare and Whoredom Rife.
