DOES

Gritty, stripped-back power trio rock with a sharp garage edge. Driving rhythms and raspy baritone vocals for moments that require pure, unadorned momentum.

Intro

DOES operates with the lean efficiency of a classic power trio, stripping away the synth-heavy layers often found in modern J-rock to reveal a skeletal, muscular core. Their sound is defined by Wataru Ujihara’s distinctive baritone, which carries a weathered, no-nonsense weight that contrasts sharply with the high-tenor vocals typical of their peers. It is music that feels tactile and physical, built on the foundation of a dry, snapping snare and overdriven guitar riffs that favor impact over complexity.

What makes them truly distinctive is their restraint. While many contemporary Japanese rock bands lean into maximalist arrangements and complex math-rock structures, DOES sticks to a garage-rock ethos. They use space as an instrument, allowing the bass to drive the melody while the guitar provides rhythmic texture. There is a persistent sense of forward motion in their tracks, a 'Bakuchi Dancer' energy that feels like a high-stakes gamble or a sprint through a dark alley.

For those new to the band, their work on the Gintama soundtrack provides the perfect entry point. Tracks like 'Donten' and 'Bakuchi Dancer' showcase their ability to craft massive, anthemic hooks without sacrificing their gritty, underground aesthetic. It is the ideal soundtrack for when you need music that feels honest, urgent, and entirely devoid of filler.

DOES (ドーズ, Dōzu) is a three-piece Japanese rock band. DOES was formed in 2000 in the Fukuoka prefecture, where they continued to write songs and perform gigs until 2005. In 2005, some members left and the group went on hiatus. Releasing songs since 2004, DOES signed with Ki/oon Records in 2006. In 2008, their sixth single "Donten" reached third on the Oricon weekly music ranking charts. It was also the fifth opening for the anime Gintama. On April 21, 2010, the band released their single "Bakuchi Dancer." The single sold around 33,000 copies in its initial week and debuted at number 3 on the Oricon weekly charts. The single ended up to be the 30th best selling single for the first half of 2010 and the 74th best single of the entire year. On November 14, 2012, the band released the single "Yumemiru Sekai", which is also the third opening for Space Brothers. In summer 2014 they released a CD single called "Guren" to be used as the 15th opening to the anime Naruto: Shippuden. On August 6, 2014, their special sixth album DOES went on sale. The band went on a hiatus in 2016 and returned in 2020.
