Doldrums

Doldrums (US) was a pivotal yet elusive fixture of the American experimental rock underground during the mid-to-late 1990s. Formed in Fairfax, Virginia, the trio consisted of Justin Chearno, Bill Kellum, and Matt Kellum.

Their sound identity is defined by a strict adherence to live, no-overdub improvisation, blending the motorik repetition of Krautrock with the textural exploration of early post-rock and space rock. Unlike their contemporaries who sought grandiosity, Doldrums focused on the 'dry' and 'intimate' possibilities of the power trio format. Bill Kellum's role as the head of VHF Records placed the band at the center of a global network of avant-garde and psychedelic artists, including Flying Saucer Attack and Skullflower. Despite their critical standing, the band famously never toured, maintaining a studio-only existence that added to their cult mystique. Their career arc concluded in 2000 with 'Feng Shui', leaving behind a discography that remains a touchstone for fans of non-linear, instrumental rock that prioritizes process and interplay over traditional composition.
