Intro

Doormouse, the primary alias of Milwaukee-born producer Daniel Martin, is a foundational figure in the American breakcore scene. Emerging in the late 1990s, Martin bridged the gap between the European 'hardcore' sound and the burgeoning experimental electronic movements in the US.

Through his labels Addict Records and Distort, he cultivated a specific aesthetic that favored high-speed rhythmic complexity, heavy distortion, and a confrontational, punk-derived attitude. His work is characterized by the extreme manipulation of breakbeats, often exceeding 200 BPM, layered with industrial textures and satirical sampling. After a decade-long hiatus starting in 2008 to focus on fitness and gym ownership, his 2021 return signaled a renewed interest in the 'classic' breakcore sound, blending archival unreleased material with contemporary production. Critically, he is viewed as a peer to Venetian Snares and Kid606, though his sound remains more tethered to the raw, unpolished energy of the Midwest rave circuit than the more melodic or glitch-focused wings of IDM.
