Dorn

Dorn was founded in 1998 in Frankfurt an der Oder by Roberto Liebig, following his departure from the pagan metal outfit Riger. Initially a solo project, Dorn saw Liebig handling nearly all instrumentation on early releases like 'Falschheit' and 'Brennende Kälte.'

This era is characterized by a high degree of melodicism and a reliance on synth-driven atmospheres that set it apart from the more aggressive, lo-fi black metal of the time. The project evolved into a full band by 2004's 'Suriel,' introducing a more diverse vocal palette including female vocals and more complex arrangements. Culturally, Dorn occupies a space between the melodic black metal scene and the German 'Dark Metal' movement, often associated with labels like CCP Records. Their lyrical focus on modern existentialism, depression, and social issues provides a stark contrast to the mythological themes of their peers. Critically, they are respected for their consistent production quality and the seamless integration of symphonic elements into a mid-tempo metal framework.
