Sun-drenched West Coast bounce with a distinct Chicano identity. Heavy basslines and catchy Spanglish hooks made for slow cruising and backyard celebrations.
This is the definitive sound of the 805, a blend of classic West Coast G-funk aesthetics with a deep, unapologetic Chicano cultural core. The music is defined by its 'bounce' - that specific mid-tempo rhythm that feels designed for a car with hydraulics. It carries the warmth of a California afternoon, mixing high-pitched synth whistles with heavy, melodic basslines that command attention without being overly aggressive.
What sets Down AKA Kilo apart is his ability to bridge the gap between hardcore street narratives and infectious, radio-ready hooks. His delivery is often relaxed and rhythmic, utilizing Spanglish and regional slang that grounds the music in a very specific sense of place. It is celebratory and proud, focusing on identity, community, and the simple pleasure of a slow drive through the neighborhood.
Start with 'Lean Like a Cholo' to understand the cultural phenomenon he sparked in the mid-2000s. It captures his signature blend of danceable energy and street-level charisma. From there, explore 'Definition of an Ese' for a deeper look at the production style that defined the Chicano rap movement during its commercial peak.

He released his debut album California Cowboyz in 2003, and his second album Definition of an Ese in 2007, with two singles from the album, "Lean like a Cholo" and "Definition of an Ese."
