Download emerged in 1994 as a vital evolution of the post-industrial sound, founded by cEvin Key and Dwayne Goettel of Skinny Puppy. Born from the 'SubConscious' production style, the project moved away from the theatrical horror of their primary band toward a more experimental, rhythm-focused electronic exploration.

Following Goettel's tragic passing in 1995, Key, along with Phil Western and Mark Spybey, steered the project into territories shared by Autechre and Aphex Twin, though always retaining a darker, more tactile Canadian industrial edge. Their work is characterized by heavy use of modular synthesis, complex sampling, and a 'live-to-tape' improvisational philosophy. Critically, they are regarded as a bridge between the 80s industrial scene and the 90s IDM explosion. Their influence is felt in the 'dark IDM' and 'industrial techno' subgenres, where the focus on sound design and atmospheric tension outweighs traditional song structure. The project remains a cornerstone of the SubConscious Records collective, representing a high-water mark for technical electronic craftsmanship.
