Drab Majesty is the primary creative vehicle for Andrew Clinco, who performs under the persona of Deb Demure. Emerging from the Los Angeles underground in 2011, the project was born from Clinco's transition from drums to guitar, heavily influenced by the atmospheric work of his Marriages bandmate Emma Ruth Rundle.
The project is a cornerstone of the modern darkwave revival, specifically the 'Dais Records sound' which blends industrial grit with pop sensibility. Musically, Drab Majesty is defined by intricate, arpeggiated guitar work reminiscent of The Chameleons or Felt, paired with the synth-heavy gloom of Clan of Xymox. The addition of Mona D in 2016 expanded the project into a duo, allowing for more complex live arrangements and a heightened focus on performance art. Their visual identity - featuring white face paint, wigs, and mirrored glasses - serves to de-personalize the music, framing the performance as a ritualistic exchange rather than a traditional concert. Critically, they are lauded for elevating darkwave beyond mere 80s pastiche through sophisticated songwriting and occult-leaning conceptual depth.
