Drain

Gritty noise rock meets mechanical techno pulses. A disorienting blend of psychedelic guitar sludge and cold drum machine precision for late-night deep dives.

Intro

Drain was an experimental noise rock project formed in Austin, Texas, in 1991, led by King Coffey, the drummer of the legendary Butthole Surfers. Joined by David McCreath and Owen McMahon (of the noise rock outfit Cherubs), the trio moved away from the sprawling psychedelia of Coffey's primary band toward a more rhythmic, industrial-influenced sound.

Their work is characterized by a heavy reliance on samplers and drum machines, which was relatively rare for the Texas noise rock scene of the era. This electronic backbone provided a rigid framework for the group's distorted bass lines and textural guitar work. Signed to Trance Syndicate, the label founded by Coffey, Drain released two significant albums: 'Pick Up Heaven' (1992) and 'Offspeed and in There' (1996). Critical consensus views the project as a bridge between the aggressive noise rock of the early 90s and the burgeoning electronic and industrial movements. They are often cited as a key example of the 'Austin Sound' evolving into more avant-garde territory, influencing later acts that sought to blend live instrumentation with mechanical repetition.
